What Life is Like for Trans People (Collection of Stories)

Trans people live a very different life than cis people. As a cis person, I will never be able to understand personally what it's like to be trans or nonbinary. However, it is possible to empathize with the trans community through reading their stories and gaining an understanding of what they go through.

Here are a collection of trans stories that I've found and read on the internet

I was petrified he might murder me’: The everyday reality of life as a trans person: By June Dawson --> Read here

  1. June Dawson talks about her life as a trans women in the domains of Public Toilets, Clubs and Bars, Public Safety, Homelessness and Employment. She talks about her experiences in these places and relates them back to statistics about the transgender community. I found this to be a fun read that I could understand through her personal anecdotes that were connected to serious statistics!

Living as a Transgender Woman: Surgeries, Stigma, and Struggle: By Danielle Weitzer --> Read here

  1. Danielle talks about her experience through the lens of her transition, her experiences with healthcare providers and how she navigated her college experience. Danielle's story is highly personal and exemplifies the problems our healthcare systems have with treating trans people. I think this story is definitely eye-opening and I would reccomend this one a lot

Life As Sarah: What it's like to be a transgender woman when you're not Caitlyn Jenner: By Monica Hesse --> Read here

  1. Monica Hesse tells the story of Sarah, a black transgender woman and how Sarah navigates her daily life as a black trans woman. We get to see what it's like for Sarah to pass as a woman and what she does to ensure that she's is not attacked by transphobes and not affected by gender dysphoria. Trans issues are definitely intersectional. I think that reading about Sarah gave me a different perspective on what it's like to we a trans person in the United States. Seeing as black trans women are the most affected by violence, I would give this article if you want to see someone's life from a less privileged standpoint.

Transgender Stories: "People Think We Wake Up and Decide to Be Trans": By The Guardian --> Read here

  1. Read about the experiences of 5 different trans people ranging from ages 18-70. Here you get to see what it's like to be a young trans person versus what the trans community went through a long time ago. This article really showed me how far we've come as a community. However we still have a long way to go and understanding trans-perspectives is only the start of it.
